what story about yourself lets people get to know the real you?
I can't tell a joke to save my life. A few weeks ago I heard a joke that went over really well and it seemed pretty simple in the telling. So I made a mental note of the key points of the joke to use at a later date. That weekend I was at brunch at my mom's house. Seemed like a safe crowd - so I get the appropriate visual aids ready and at the next lull in conversation I begin my tale. Right away my heart rate goes up as I round the first base of this three-part joke, but I manage to go on. I stumble a bit on the second detail and my ears start to get really hot, but I recover and go on. (Keep in mind we're looking at an audience of 3 people, loved ones even!) So I'm sliding home and I can see my brother just waiting for me to crack - and I can't quite remember how to phrase that last part, the clincher. And I giggle. Yes ladies and gentlemen nothing ruins a joke more that breaking in to gales of unstoppable laughter just as you get to the punch line. But in the end it works out ok because then everyone can laugh at you instead of the joke. Laughs achieved. Joke successful. |
